SUP Northumberland

Explore the coasts and rivers of England’s northern frontier, on a private stand up paddleboarding experience.

Private SUP experiences in Northumberland

Our private, expert-led experiences are for paddlers who want to explore at their own pace. If you are curious about what lies beyond the obvious launch spots, you’re in the right place.

We plan each session around the conditions and your experience, choosing locations that might include quiet estuaries, tidal channels or stretches of open coastline. The aim is simple: to give you access to places you wouldn’t confidently reach alone, and the knowledge to understand them when you do.

Along the way, you’ll paddle with a qualified SUP coach and WiSe certified guide, building a clearer sense of how wind, tide and terrain shape the journey. It’s not a lesson, but you will come away a more capable, more aware paddler.

Expect space, time, and a pace that suits you. We stop when something’s worth stopping for - whether that’s wildlife, historic features, or just a stretch of coastline that deserves a closer look. If you’re deciding between hiring a board and heading out solo, this is the alternative: a more informed, more rewarding way to experience the same coastline.

Each trip is private (1–4 people), allowing us to keep things flexible and properly tailored to you.

FAQs

  • We meet at a mutually agreed location, where you’ll meet your guides, get kitted up, and go over the session plan and safety briefing. We then launch onto the water for a gentle warm up. Then it’s off to paddle along the coastline, taking in the changing scenery, sea birds, and (if we’re lucky) seals popping up to say hello.

Along the way, we’ll pause to explore quiet inlets, enhance our SUP skills, and take time to soak up the calm and beauty of the surroundings. You can choose a relaxed or more athletic pace to suit your needs.

  • Yes — we provide paddleboard, paddle, buoyancy aid, leash and accessories. We have 3mm wetsuits, 5mm wetsuits and drysuits available. If you prefer to use your own board or wetsuit, just let us know in advance.

You will need your base layer, a towel, water bottle, and warm clothes for after. Even on sunny days, the North Sea can feel fresh!

There are often no indoor changing facilities where we get in and out, so you should be comfortable changing outdoors with a towel or robe.

  • Prior paddleboarding experience is recommended if you want to explore the coast, but we can tailor the session to accommodate all abilities.

People with zero prior experience are welcome, but the session will likely be tuition focussed and in sheltered water.

  • The session is led by Simon Laing and/or Sonja Baer. Both are experienced adventure guides with professional SUP instructor qualifications. Simon is also a graduate of marine biology and coastal ecology and can offer a rich interpretation of the coastal environment. You can read more about them on our ‘our team’ page.

If you prefer a woman guide, please do let us know in advance and we’ll ensure Sonja leads the trip.
